Have you come to hate green screens?
Every platform promises it–a simple, one-click green screen removal that will instantly make you look like you’re working at the beach instead of at the kitchen table across from your toddler. But more often than not, you end up looking like a cardboard cutout with one ear missing and a jittering aura around you.
But done right, green screens can be powerful!
Green screens have been an indispensable part of cinema for almost a hundred years. But it takes a professional to shoot, pull, and convincingly composite this kind of footage. For the shoot that resulted in the screenshot below, we spent an entire day in the studio with a carefully lit background, an ultra-high resolution camera, and plenty of separation between the screen and the actors to minimize spill.

Then in After Effects, we stacked multiple layers with different keying values to achieve a convincing pull. To make our actors look organic in their new environment, we added a light wrap, and adjusted the talent’s color and brightness to match the room.
Finally we used a custom depth map on the background plate to simulate the focal length of a real camera lens. The result is a convincing composite that looks almost like the real thing. No wavy edges or cardboard cut-outs here!
